Chewie, we’re home
In what is the biggest thing since Star Wars released theatrically in 1977, Dad and I got our first Legion game under our belt! Well, this is momentous for me, since I wasn’t born yet in 1977.
Wow, what a game. What an experience.
I’ll preface here first that I’m jumping ahead in my blog chronological timeline, but I’ve now caught up to present day and this was too big an occasion to write about at a later date. Since my last post, there has mainly been terrain painting (since I had this weekend as a deadline), catching up on my ever increasing backlog (including those never ending stormtroopers) and the creation of our narrative campaign to which we commenced today. I will post about those in time to come.
But I digress. As I mentioned, I drew up a narrative campaign for us to play as our first few battles. The idea was to keep it thematic but give Dad (and me too) a way to ease into the gameplay, rules and general all round understanding. I borrowed one of FFG’s campaigns (Silent Hail for those interested) and appropriated it to suit our needs. I must say, was pretty happy with myself in how I created the campaign. I hope I nailed it, so stay tuned for further battles!
As Dad has never built a list before, I took liberties in doing so for him for this campaign; selecting the units, command cards, upgrades etc. I mapped out the following 3 games also, but if he’s comfortable in doing so, I’m more than happy for him to change/adjust as he sees fit. They’re his rebel scum after all!
It took us a while to set up our Endor board and to get our armies ready. Dad didn’t have much time to do any pre planning or reading prior so we did it all on the fly before the game kicked off. Bit of a learning curve for dad in terms of creating lists and getting cards sorted but he got the hang of it. With more practice I’m sure it will become second nature for us both.
The first round got off to a slow start with both of us getting used to the mechanics and rules themselves. Lot of manoeuvring around for both sides as we were playing intercept the transmissions and disarray; the latter probably not the best to start with in hindsight as our forces were scattered all over the board, great for thematics but not so much for learning! We consulted the RRG and quick start on numerous occasions to see if we were doing it right (no amount of bat reps watched could ensure that I was on the right path). It wasn’t until we started rolling the dice that the game really took off.
Come the end of the 4th round, I was winning 5-1 in terms of victory points and poor Dad had just lost Op Luke and Han, his last commander. He had two troopers left, a unit leader and a z6, from seperate units. He was left with no other option but to concede. Victory for the Empire in Game 1!
Whilst it may seem like the rebels got decimated, I got some very lucky rolls in and Dad didn’t. I’m pretty sure there were a few things that went awry along the way with dice pools, rolls and rule in general. But we’ll get there. One lesson learnt is that we probably didn’t have enough terrain out as well, especially scatter terrain. What we did have was not enough to cover well (but we probably played that wrong too). All I can say is it was bloody awesome to roll dice and get a game under our belts. Needless to say, I’m hooked!!
